Dragonfly comes in a range of miniature high-performance data acquisition cards and support modules.

The world of digital data acquisition has matured over the past few years, offering high-quality and performance data acquisition products in a variety of form factors, with one exception: miniature, vehicle-mounted, high-performance and ultra low-power modules. Dragonfly fills this area.


Dragonfly provides not only Data Acquisition modules, but also support modules such as:

  • Core2 Duo, Core i5, and Core i7 CPU modules powerful enough for any measurement task,
  • Solid State Disk (SSD) modules for extended removable storage needs,
  • Battery / UPS power modules for 6 – 30 V DC inputs
  • Gigabit Ethernet Switches with Power Over Ethernet (POE) capability
  • Ethernet connected remote control / display unit

All modules can be configured to IP64 ratings and are produced in extruded aluminium chassis for robust all-weather operation.

Dragonfly modules are designed for single module operation, either tethered to a laptop or other PC or distributed over wide distances (100s of metres) in multiple unit networks. Dragonfly modules can also be easily joined together to form more localised measurement hubs using the built in T slot and bar.

More complex systems can be built up from multiple module types to provide the functionality / performance required by individual users. The following day a completely different architecture can be created by simply rearranging the modules as required. This capability is unique to Dragonfly and represent the most flexible and cost effective measurement systems available on the market today.

Dragonfly is a high quality modular data acquisition system for applications ranging from ultra-portable small channel count mobile field based needs to large scale fixed installations of hundreds of synchronous channels.

Dragonfly is completely compatible with the existing range of data acquisition, real-time monitoring, analysis and archiving systems, and due to its network based architecture can be integrated into 3rd party or customer bespoke systems with ease.

Dragonfly is small enough to fit easily in a laptop bag, and lightweight enough (at < 1 kg) for easy transport to remote sites. As such it makes an ideal measurement system with a standard laptop for personal / consultancy field work. However, the standard Dragonfly is also able to be linked with other units to create large multi-purpose systems simply by sliding it together with one or more other modules, and connecting a few simple cables (power, sync, and Ethernet).

Dragonfly can be fitted with a number of internal signal conditioning cards which further extend its capabilities and benefits to end users. Single or multiple conditioning functions can be hosted by an individual Dragonfly and cards can be swapped out by users if required.

Synchronisation between Dragonfly modules is achieved using LVDS synchronisation cables running from one unit to the next, over distances up to at least 100 m. To acquire data from a single modular system over larger distances, please consider the Dragonfly GPS module.

The Dragonfly IRIG module obtains its time-stamp and clock synchronisation signal from an analogue IRIG-B signal connected using an auxiliary connector on the rear of the unit. This can be used to synchronise data between a Dragonfly-based system and external third-party systems, or it can be used to synchronise distributed Dragonfly units that are too far away for direct LVDS synchronisation as found on the standard Dragonfly module.

The Dragonfly GPS module differs from the standard Dragonfly acquisition module, due to the inclusion of a GPS receiver for timing and optionally for position information. When connected to an external GPS antenna, the Dragonfly GPS module obtains time information from the GPS satellites. It provides the same LVDS synchronisation signal to other Dragonfly modules that is used between standard Dragonfly modules. In this way, it is possible to build a widely distributed acquisition system using standard Dragonfly modules and LVDS cables and one Dragonfly GPS module at each local site.
